About PDF

PDF fixes a document's layout so it looks the same wherever it is opened, which is why it is the usual format for anything final. It is normally used for contracts, invoices, reports, forms and anything meant to be printed or archived. A PDF is designed to be read rather than edited, so changing the text after the fact is awkward.

About DOCX

DOCX is the modern Word format: a ZIP archive of XML describing the text, styles and images of a document. It is normally used for letters, reports, essays and any document still being written. How a DOCX looks depends on the fonts and Word version on the machine opening it, so the same file can reflow elsewhere.

What to expect

  • The PDF must contain selectable text. Scanned or photographed pages need OCR, which is not supported yet.
  • Charts and diagrams are preserved as images, so the surrounding text stays editable but the chart itself is not.
  • Complex layouts may not reconstruct perfectly; nested tables read as a single grid, and justified text becomes left-aligned.
  • Password-protected PDFs are not supported.

What happens to your file

Your file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own conversion servers over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and converted there in a temporary workspace, which is removed once processing completes. We do not keep copies, and we do not log file names or file contents.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
Yes. Converting this format needs software that cannot run in a browser, so the file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own servers over HTTPS, converted in a temporary workspace, and removed once processing completes.
Does converting PDF to DOCX reduce quality?
Neither format compresses your content away, but this is not a re-encode - the document is rebuilt. Text, tables, headings, headers and footers are reconstructed as real, editable Word content, and straightforward documents come through closely. Heavily designed layouts are where it drifts: charts and diagrams are kept as images rather than editable drawings, nested tables read as one grid, and justified text comes back left-aligned.
How big a file can I convert?
Files can be up to 25 MB, and documents of up to 100 pages. Rebuilding a document reads its text and layout rather than rendering pictures of it, so the limit is higher here than for converting a PDF to images.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
Not yet. A scanned page is a photograph of text, and reading it needs OCR, which FilesMagic does not do. The quick test is to try selecting the text in a PDF reader: if you can select it, this will convert it; if the page behaves like a picture, it will not. We tell you outright rather than returning an empty document.
Will charts and diagrams still be editable?
No. A chart is kept as an image, positioned where it was, and everything around it stays editable text. Rebuilding it as an editable Word drawing would produce something that looks approximately right and cannot be adjusted, and the underlying numbers are not in the PDF to recover.
