About the formats

About XLS

XLS is the pre-2007 Excel format, a binary workbook container that predates XLSX. It is normally used for older spreadsheets and exports from legacy systems. It caps out at 65,536 rows per sheet and is read less reliably than XLSX.

About PDF

PDF fixes a document's layout so it looks the same wherever it is opened, which is why it is the usual format for anything final. It is normally used for contracts, invoices, reports, forms and anything meant to be printed or archived. A PDF is designed to be read rather than edited, so changing the text after the fact is awkward.

What to expect

  • Spreadsheets export using their print layout; columns narrower than their contents are clipped, exactly as they would print.

What happens to your file

Your file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own conversion servers over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and converted there in a temporary workspace, which is removed once processing completes. We do not keep copies, and we do not log file names or file contents.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?
Yes. Converting this format needs software that cannot run in a browser, so the file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own servers over HTTPS, converted in a temporary workspace, and removed once processing completes.
Does converting XLS to PDF reduce quality?
Neither format discards detail, so the image data survives the conversion intact. Only the file size changes.
How big a file can I convert?
Files can be up to 25 MB. That is generous for this format - if a file is larger than that it is usually because of embedded images, and compressing those before converting normally brings it well under the limit.
