JPEG compresses photographs by discarding detail the eye is least likely to notice, which makes photo files small. It is normally used for photographs, camera output and images on the web. It cannot store transparency, and every re-save discards a little more detail.

What to expect

  • Transparent areas become white, because JPEG has no transparency.
  • Animated WebP is not supported - only still images.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

Yes. Converting this format needs software that cannot run in a browser, so the file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own servers, converted, and deleted once your download has been sent.

Does converting WebP to JPEG reduce quality?

Both formats compress by discarding detail, so re-encoding loses a little more. Converting once is fine; repeatedly converting the same file back and forth is what degrades it.

How big a file can I convert?

Files can be up to 25 MB. That is generous for this format - if a file is larger than that it is usually because of embedded images, and compressing those before converting normally brings it well under the limit.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are composited onto a white background rather than turning black. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
