About the formats
About AVIF
AVIF applies AV1 video compression to still images, generally producing smaller files than JPEG at the same quality. It is normally used for images on sites optimising for page weight. It is the newest of the common web formats, so older software may not open it.
About JPEG
JPEG compresses photographs by discarding detail the eye is least likely to notice, which makes photo files small. It is normally used for photographs, camera output and images on the web. It cannot store transparency, and every re-save discards a little more detail.
What to expect
- Transparent areas become white, because JPEG has no transparency.
What happens to your file
Your file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own conversion servers over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and converted there in a temporary workspace, which is removed once processing completes. We do not keep copies, and we do not log file names or file contents.
