About the formats

About WebM

WebM is an open, royalty-free video container built for the web, typically carrying VP8 or VP9 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. It is normally used for video embedded directly in web pages. Editing software and older devices support it less consistently than MP4.

About MP4

MP4 is the most widely supported video container, normally holding H.264 video alongside AAC audio. It is normally used for video for the web, phones, editing software and social platforms. It is a container rather than a codec, so an MP4 can still hold streams a given player cannot decode.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

Yes. Converting this format needs software that cannot run in a browser, so the file is uploaded to FilesMagic's own servers, converted, and deleted once your download has been sent.

Does converting WebM to MP4 reduce quality?

Both formats compress by discarding detail, so re-encoding loses a little more. Converting once is fine; repeatedly converting the same file back and forth is what degrades it.

How big a file can I convert?

Files can be up to 25 MB, and video is additionally limited to 5 minutes and 1080p. Converting video is demanding work, and those limits are what keep it fast for everyone.
